Discover You Can: Learn, Make, Share? Food Preservation Program at Local Farmers Markets Supports Farm-to-Table Movement
The Port Orchard Farmers Market is a favorite summer destination for farm-fresh, local produce and community collaboration. This year, the popular food preservation program, Discover You Can: Learn, Make, Share? will be joining the farmers market to help visitors learn to can and vacuum seal food, make recipes, and use fresh local produce to enjoy and share favorite dishes with friends all year long.
The education program is particularly timely as the ever-growing farm-to-table and home-canning and vacuum sealing movements continue gaining momentum. Discover You Can: Learn, Make, Share resulted from a partnership between the Farmers Market Coalition (FMC), FoodSaver®, the #1 vacuum-sealing system, and makers of Ball® Brand Fresh Preserving Products, in order to support healthy, sustainable food practices.
Makers of Ball® Brand Fresh Preserving Products and FoodSaver® Brand supplied 50 FMC farmers market organizations with the materials needed to host instructional canning and vacuum sealing demonstrations for their local communities. The program spreads awareness of the benefits of food preservation for healthy, sustainable living, and provides tools to support farmers market experiential educational programs.
“Discover You Can: Learn, Make, Share? offers creative ideas and tools to get people excited about learning to can and vacuum seal,” says Elizabeth Comiskey, membership and outreach coordinator. “The program supports local farmers and food artisans while inspiring market goers to preserve and save seasonal produce, meats, and cheeses to enjoy throughout the year.”
Visit pofarmersmarket.org for a schedule of local activities, or visit FarmersMarketCoalition.org, FreshPreserving.com or FoodSaver.com for additional information about the 2014 Discover You Can: Learn, Make, Share? education program.
There will be two events happening on this day. Feel free to join in the early morning session (9:30am-11:00am) or in the afternoon session (1:00pm-2:30pm).
