Description
The Helen Norris Open Art Show has been an annual event since the opening of the Sidney Gallery in the early years of the Sidney Museum and Arts Association. The importance of The Helen Norris Open Art Show is to provide a venue for artists to compete/exhibit/sell their art work, and while the professionals make it look easy, the beginning artist is challenged to produce and present at a professional level. It is a learning experience for them and they sometimes even surprise themselves by winning! The show is the outstanding exhibit of art brought forth by the overwhelming amount of participants. This generates an involvement among other galleries and art groups which ultimately creates a better network for all of us. The Helen Norris show is to teach the beginning artist as well as the public about what goes into creating, presenting, and selling fine art. The show hosts a different judge every year. During the opening reception the judge critiques the first place winners, giving the reasons for picking these particular pieces thereby educating those present in what to look for in fine art.
Registration is the last week of April. The artist interested in entering will be allowed one or two pieces of art and pay five dollars apiece as an entry fee. No other requirements are expected and they have only to follow the categories, eligibility, and conditions of the show. The categories are, oils & acrylics, watercolors, drawing (which includes: pastels, pen & ink, charcoal, pencils, and scratchboard), and mixed media (which includes: batiks, etchings, photography, collage, and sculpture). Eligibility requires each artist to submit no more than two pieces of original work. Work must have been completed within the pasts two years and not have been previously exhibited in a juried show in the South Kitsap area. Conditions are: entry forms must be filled out in triplicates, maximum size is about 40”x40”, all paintings must be suitably framed and wired for hanging, and all artwork must be for sale.
