The Sidney Art Gallery is pleased to present the work of Willadene (Billie) Torbenson and Jani Freimann as the featured show for June. The show will run June 4 through June 30 with the artists' reception held on Sunday June 9 from 1 pm to 4 pm.
Billie Torbenson was recently the judge for the 43rd Helen Norris Open Art Show held in May at the Sidney Art Gallery. She is a native of the Pacific Northwest and it has been her ambition to be an artist since early childhood. In the beginning watercolor was her chosen medium; mastering the unpredictable nature of a pigment suspended in water. Now she works with acrylic and whatever else it takes to get the painting to look as she has envisioned in her mind's eye. “My art reflects my enthusiastic approach to life. I build layers of colors and divide the saturated shapes with line. After the paint has dried, I start cutting with a sharp knife, lifting my subjects into the third dimension. The choice of subject or content becomes a narrative on the world as I imagine it in my mind. It's stimulating to play with reality. The concept is my celebration of all that God has created.” Ms. Torbenson's art is in numerous corporate and private collections around the world. She is affiliated with the Women Painters of Washington and is a Northwest Watercolor Society Signature Member.
Jani Freimann is an award winning water media and graphite artist who specializes in horses and people, but can paint or draw anything. Many of her watercolor paintings have pastel and/or India ink added. “Sometimes watercolor alone just doesn't capture the depth needed to tell the story. When pastel or ink is added, it just feels more complete.” Her style is what she calls impressionistic realism. She also enjoys photography. Her natural ability for composing a painting works for her in composing a photograph. In her portraiture, she excels in capturing the personality of the person or animal as well as the likeness.
